Pat Cummins unlikely to play in Champions Trophy 2025

Pat Cummins unlikely to play in Champions Trophy 2025

Pat Cummins is now “heavily unlikely” to lead Australia in their first major 50-over tournament since winning the World Cup. Pat Cummins unlikely to play in Champions Trophy 2025; it will continue the ODI captaincy merry go-round.

Just days after being named the face of a promo campaign for Prime Video, the Australia broadcaster of ICC events until 2027, Cummins looked to have been ruled out for next month’s ODI tournament by coach Andrew McDonald.

Australia may have to replace their skipper

Australia’s Test and one-day skipper has been nursing an ankle injury after playing all five Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and was on parental leave for the birth of his second child during the tour of Sri Lanka.

With back injuries ruling out Mitch Marsh for prospective play next February at the IPL—the T20 captain that stood in place for Cummins when Australia ventured into the limited-overs tour of England last year—chances are becoming grim for Marsh’s not joining for the Champions Trophy.

McDonald said Steve Smith or Travis Head are two options the selectors are weighing in terms of who would be captaining in the ICC’s rebooted Champions Trophy, to be held for the first time in eight years and to perform matches in Pakistan and the UAE.

If Head is chosen (and to captain in the upcoming two-ODI series in Sri Lanka), that will mean the ODI captaincy in Australia is something of a revolving door; Head will become Australia’s fifth captain in six matches.

Since the 2023 World Cup triumph, Marsh and Smith have each been captains for the team, while Josh Inglis has also acted as skipper in a one-dayer that Cummins missed against Pakistan last summer.

Josh Hazlewood is also out of the Sri Lanka series after sustaining a calf strain and remains with an injury cloud for the Champions Trophy

Who should be captain of Australia as Pat Cummins unlikely to play in Champions Trophy 2025

Steve Smith and Travis Head are the two main contenders to lead Australia in the Champions Trophy team if Pat Cummins will be out of the Champions Trophy 2025. They’ll be the two that we look at for that leadership post.

They are two clear. Steve (first) has done a good job here in a test match. He has done some good work on international cricket during the journey. So it’s between them.

“But as I said, there is no possibility of Patty, which is a little shame, and we have also got Josh Hazelwood, who is currently struggling with an injury. So that medical information comes down in the next few days and we will be able to kiss it and will notify everyone about the direction.

It must replace Australia’s three-man troop players who were nominated last month. The time limit for ICC for final troops is next Wednesday (February 12), after which ICC Technical Committee approval will be necessary for changes.

When it comes to the possibility of Australia, the leading Australia at the ICC event, Smith said today, “I really haven’t given it much idea.”

We will wait and see what happens to that squad… and then we will think of a day’s cricket after that.
